Solar Installations for Brooklynโ€™s Flat Roof Homes

Unlike pitched, suburban roofs, Brooklyn townhomes typically have small, flat roofs, and usually share walls with adjacent buildings. For this reason, conventional solar models are a poor fit for the urban environment. Thatโ€™s where we came in: we developed two unique, made in NY solar options, the Brooklyn Solar Canopy and tilt rack, to work around and elevate above these so-called challenges.

The Process of Going Solar

Solar panel installation is a turnkey business, meaning itโ€™s the responsibility of the installer to obtain the proper permits from the City. Once permits are received, Brooklyn SolarWorksโ€™s experienced installation team can complete a typical project in just one day with minimal disruption to your home and routine. From contract signing to tax season, weโ€™re here every step of the way for any questions or concerns.

Cost of Going Solar in Brooklyn

Making solar work on houses in Brooklyn is a science, and thereโ€™s no one-size-fits-all solution. Unfortunately, many installers in the area lack the specialization required to give an accurate estimate for flat roof solar upfront. And looking into solar panel pricing in any other area of the country, even in other parts of New York State or New Jersey, wonโ€™t give you the best idea of what your finances will look like for solar energy here โ€“ not only because pricing is more variable in the city, but also because we are one of the most incentivized solar markets in the country.

NYS Solar Income Tax Credit

Residential solar owners can claim a $5,000 tax credit on their New York State income taxes. The credit can be divided over multiple tax years if a client is unable to fully utilize it in a single year.

NYC SOLAR PROPERTY TAX ABATEMENT

20% of your solar installation costs can be claimed as a local property tax abatement with the NYC Department of Finance. The abatement is divided into annual 5% installments over a four year cycle. The NYC PTA will only be available for systems installed by December 31, 2023.

Historic Homeownership Rehabilitation Tax Credit

For qualifying homeowners, this state income tax credit covers a percentage of eligible rehabilitation expenses to offset costs for restoring and upgrading historic structures, including windows and doors, roofs, and solar. This tax credit can cover up to 20% of installation costs.

Net Metering

Net meteringย is a billing mechanism with Con Edison in which any excess solar energy your panels product is sent back to the grid, and then credited back to you on future Con Ed bills for you to use when your home needs more energy than your solar system is currently supplying, like at night or on a very rainy day.
