How to Use the NYC Solar Calculator
Solar in New York City is unique. Compared to other areas of the country, there are specific economic and regulatory circumstances here that affect the financial picture for a homeowner looking to go solar.
That’s why we’ve developed our very own NYC Solar Calculator. The average solar power calculator that you’ll find on Google can’t give you a realistic picture for going solar in NYC, as these calculators use national data to produce very broad estimates. But we’ve been installing solar for our neighbors in NYC since 2015, and have a pretty good idea at this point of not only how much a high quality solar installation costs here in the city, but also how much money you stand to save on your Con Edison bills. The average solar calculator can’t say the same.
If you’re a New York City resident, our NYC Solar Calculator is the best way to get an accurate estimate for how much home solar could cost for you. To get started on your journey to solar savings, follow these easy steps:
- Input your address located within the five boroughs.
- Use the slider to indicate how much, on average, you pay Con Ed for electricity every month.
- Click on “See My Solar Savings.”
- View your quote for your potential solar project.
How does the NYC solar cost and savings calculator work?
Our calculator works by using your address and average monthly bill amount, plus our historical project data, to produce an estimate for both cash and financing. This estimate includes:
- Net project cost
- Lifetime electricity savings
- Payback period
- Savings from government tax incentives
- Your environmental impact
- And more benefits of going solar with us!
To be clear, this is a preliminary quote that is subject to change depending on a number of factors. In order to finalize your quote, you’ll need to schedule a consultation with us so that we can talk about your energy needs, how the solar process works, and create a system design for your roof.
How accurate is the solar savings calculator?
Our NYC Solar Calculator uses historical data specific to New York City to provide you with an estimate of how much a project like yours could cost and how much you could save on your electricity costs with solar energy. But because this is just a preliminary estimate, it is possible that your project cost could change once you have a consultation with us and provide more information specific to your home.
Will you provide an estimate for both electric bill savings and environmental benefits?
When you use this tool, we will provide estimates for both energy savings and for how much of an impact you could have on the environment by going solar. When you calculate your quote, you’ll see:
- Lifetime electricity savings
- Average monthly electric bill after solar
- CO2 emissions avoided annually
- Equivalent number of trees planted annually
What factors affect the cost of solar panels for your home in NYC?
There are a variety of factors that we take into account when pricing our solar installation projects. The cost of your project is influenced by the following:
- Size of your system, i.e. the number of solar panels
- Roof type
- Materials and equipment used for your system
- Labor costs
- Your location and building type
- Administrative costs associated with permitting your project
- Complexity of installation and additional work needed, i.e. any necessary electrical work
Does the NYC solar calculator consider incentives and rebates?
Unlike other solar savings tools, our NYC Solar Calculator factors in all of the federal, state, and local tax incentives and rebates that are available for NYC residents when estimating your net project cost.
How does residential solar work in NYC?
Residential solar in NYC works similarly to any other area, using sunlight and just a few components to provide your home with renewable energy. However, there are unique design considerations that need to be made due to a variety of architectural and regulatory factors – from the abundance of flat roofs (as opposed to pitched or sloped roofs) to the bureaucracy involved with construction in New York City.
But don’t worry – we’re experts at NYC solar, and will design a system that both maximizes your solar potential and moves through the regulatory process seamlessly.
How do I calculate my solar payback period?
One of your biggest questions may be how long it’ll take for your investment in solar to begin making a return. Your payback may vary depending on whether you pay for your system in cash or use financing.
When you use our NYC Solar Calculator, we will give you an estimate on your payback period. But generally, payback period is calculated using the following steps:
- Start with the Total Cost of Installation.
- Subtract any incentives and rebates the project qualifies for. This gives you the Net Project Cost.
- Divide the Net Project Cost by your Annual Electric Savings.
This basic formula assumes that electricity rates will remain constant over time. We know this isn’t the reality though – especially in NYC. However, that just means your solar power will become more valuable as the years go on and your payback period will become shorter.
When you receive a final proposal from us, we’ll take rising energy prices into account to determine an accurate payback period for your system.
How can I find out about the incentives available in my area?
You may already be aware of the federal solar tax credit that covers 30% of your installation costs. But here in New York City, we’re lucky to be one of the most incentivized solar markets in the country. There are a number of tax incentives and rebates on the state and local level too, typically covering the majority of residential project costs. You can learn more about these incentives by visiting our New York Solar Incentives page.
Are there any maintenance costs when going solar in New York?
Maintaining a solar power system in New York generally requires very little effort. Because there are no moving parts to a solar PV system, there’s not much that you actively need to keep an eye on. Cleaning your solar panels is not required either, because they’re angled in such a way that Mother Nature can typically take care of any build up of dirt or debris.
In the event that your system needs any maintenance or repairs, it’ll be covered by our comprehensive warranty package. Get your quote to learn more about what’s covered.
